1. Which of the possible venues do you think would best suit the play? Circle the one you choose and explain why you think it would work best.
Proscenium
Arena
Thrust
Flexible
I believe a proscenium venue would best fit this play. As the play progresses, we never leave the place where it originally started. This leads me to believe that we would be looking at this play from the front. Also, when describing the buildings, one can easily imagine that there is an open scene, especially the courtyard, where the majority of dialogue takes place.
2. What are some of the challenges posed by the play on the scene designer?
There are many challenges that come up for this play. For starters, the designer must balance understanding the play and deliver the intended messages and emotions to the audience. The next challenge would be picking the right characters. The designer must choose the best-qualified person for each character, this is crucial to portray the correct face to a role. The background scenery must be proper for the time period as well as lighting to deliver the right emotions.
3. Choose a character from the play and suggest how she/he should be dressed. In what ways do you think the costume would help accentuate his/her character.
I choose Nelson. I can see this character wearing the proper military attire for this era. The only key features are that his clothing would not fit him properly. This is important because it portrays his socioeconomic situation. It could also insinuate that, because he is of color, he would get the rundown version of their military uniforms. A proper fitting uniform would portray self-confidence and respect, all in which Nelson lacks.
4. Provide ideas about the use of light in the play.
Since this play is located in the shores of South Carolina, I would use lighting that portrays a hot humid day. I would also base the scenes in the evening, this would symbolize that an end draws closer similar to the end of the day approaching. Setting this play in the morning time would symbolize hope, something that Julia wants but never gets.
5. Suggest music or sound effects that might be used to suggest the mood or atmosphere of the play and the transitions between parts of the play.
For the most part, music in the background would be taking away from much of the dialogue. I would not suggest constant background music too much. There are plenty of excellent opportunities for sound effects, though, especially during the main conflicts in the play. The dramatic orchestra would definitely be most fitting in my opinion.
